Mine 10 gal looks bad most of the time but I have the feeling there’s something healthy about the growth and yuck in there.

Without testing for ammonia or good ph is it possible that the fish are enjoying it.. My pleco is 10 yrs, a gourami and tetras are about 3.

some of it is good for them, but too much is bad. my fish – guppies – live in a wonderfully green 22gal tank, lol. with those fish, i could put dish soap in there and it wouldn’t do anything to them, but you have some tropical fish which aren’t as hardy. try cleaning it once a month or every two weeks.

Depends on what species of fish it is.

  3. I doubt it but maybe it makes them feel less homesick… (They were probably born in Petsmart or something..)

I don’t think anyone would enjoy much of a dirty tank even if a fish can thrive in that tank. If you have like algae, well, that would be a different case.

My 50 gallon fish tank developed this yucky case of black algae. I was so concerned about my fish. I brought in a sample of the water to my local fish store to have it tested. It tested just fine in spite of the the algae problem. The professional told me that even though the water looks bad it won’t hurt the fish. To get rid of the problem I had to cut my entire take off from all light. I wrapped it in tin foil and only opening the top part to put in the food. After a couple of weeks it totally cleared up. I was also told that if I saw the conditions these fish lived in in the wild I would be appalled. Apparently their natural habitat is like mud water, murky and dirty looking. Anyway, I have a sparkling clean tank now and I feel better that my fish weren’t harmed. Good luck.
