How can I fish speaker wire through an insulated wall?

I have drilled a hole under the house (in the crawlspace) directly below the hole in the wall where I want the speaker wire to come out, but I can’t get the fish tape to go from point A to point B. I think that the hole I drilled in the crawlspace might be behind the insulation. How can I fish around the insulation? Is there a certain technique to do this? I’ve never worked with fish tape before – I just bought a 25′ tape from Home Depot.

Try to push the fishtape at an angle so it will “ride up” the inside surface of the drywall. Insulation will be hard to get through and may divert the tape.

As long as the holes match up close enough you can use a thick stiff copper wire and run it down into the hole from the wall raising it up and down gently moving it left and right until you feel it go through the hole, then tie a strong string on it pulling it through the hole. strong copper wire most of the time will go through installation. This has worked out great for most of my projects throughout my years.

Cut a hole the size of a receptacle for your speaker system( 2×3″) where you want the leads for the equipment. Then reach into the wall for the fish tape. If you wrap white tape on the end of the fish tape it will be more visible. Attach a draw string to the end of the fish tape and then attach the cables or wires as needed. Use a knife to cut the insulation to find the tape.
