Fish

My cube mate and I have a fish tank at work and for some reason, fish keep “leaving” the tank. There are no signs of them in the tank and these fish aren’t big enough to eat eachother. We think someone is actually taking them when we aren’t here. I was wondinering if anyone had any suggestions on how to lock the tank- its 10gallons. Thanks!

  1. Hide Folders

While there are devices to latch the top of a fish tank to keep children or pets out I don’t know that there is an easy way to lock one. It is however possible that the fish are simply dying. Other fish even small ones will quickly eat a dead fish and they also decompose quickly.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it is possible to lock a standard fish tank, because there is no way of locking a plastic hood to glass. Are you sure someone is stealing the fish? Are there any plants in the tank, that the fish maybe dyeing behind? Once a fish is dead, if it isn’t removed eventually the other fish will eat it, so that it a possibility. Since, they aren’t big enough to eat each other in one bite, someone stealing them could be very possible.

In my opinion, what I would do is secretly set up a small video camera, hidden, and without telling any co-workers (incase they are the culprit), and leave it on all night, or whenever they normally go missing, and figure out who the thief is. Once you figure out who, contact someone, because who ever it is, is a really low person to go and steal a $4 fish, instead of just buying them. There isn’t even an achievement or a big sum of money being gained in that crime, it’s just stupid…

    **EDIT**

I forgot to add in, that since it could be dyeing fish, you should keep up on water changes, and get a water test kit and test your water parameters. Some LFS do this also. If the water parameters aren’t suitable for the fish, you might have found the problem.

    Good Luck!
