Imagine you are still on a deserted island and need food. Fortunately, the surrounding ocean contains lots of fish though several days often pass between your catches. Although you have matches, you have no means of refrigeration or electricity.

The answer is a “catch well”. You build a barrier in the ocean that prevents the fish from escaping, but keeps them alive and put your catch in there. Then you can just take them out with your hands or a net and eat when necessary. A lot of fishing boats have this feature built in for the same reason.
