I have to remove the carbon from my freshwater fish filter. They have Ich and the medication says to do this. Does this mean I have to remove the whole blue filter? If it does, how do I keep the tank clean for two weeks while I treat the fish for Ick?

Depending on the filter, I believe the medication wants you to either replace the filter with a new one, to dump out all the carbon material inside the filter and replace the material, or to clean the filter REALLY well before sticking it back in.

Well, first of all, do you have carbon in your filter? If all you have is a piece of fluffy blue stuff, you probably don’t have any carbon in your filter in the first place. Not all filters contain carbon. In fact, carbon is not a necessary component in a filter. Those filters that do contain carbon usually have it as an addition to other filter media, so you can just take it out and leave the other media in without the carbon. Generally it looks either like little black rocks or a thin sheet of black stuff. If you don’t have either of those in your filter, don’t worry about it. The reason you need to take any carbon out of your filter is that carbon will remove the medication from your water. If your filter does have carbon in it, you can take out the carbon and just put regular filter floss in instead. Or even just put in some polyester fibrefill from the fabric store, or a few fluffed up cotton balls as filter media temporarily.

what kind of filter do you have?
i have a canister that had room for some noodle looking things which is the filtration and then the carbon which is all black. if you have carbon it should look black in the filter and it should be in a little bag or something so just remove that whole thing and use the meds.

The carbon needs to removed or it will remove the medication. I don’t know what brand you are using so I can’t give much more information. Water changes (aged water to remove chlorine) and siphon the bottom to remove waste both daily. Maintain water circulation with air stones or using filter without carbon. Fill space with filter floss (white cottony stuff) and rinse out daily in water that was siphoned off. Be sure to check that fish or other particles would not get caught in the filters pump.
Ick can be treated with aquarium salt and raised temperature. But this can cause problems with some fish and biological filtration.
Don’t use coral in a freshwater tank. It does not filter (live sand and rock do but only in saltwater) and will only raise your hardness and make your water cloudier.

Just remove the filter pad. If you are conserned with Debris that the filter is pulling out, you can make a cut in the blue netting and pour out the carbon pieces and replace the media back into the tank. You can also buy filter media with no carbon yet you will still have the pad for debris.
