How long does it take for fish oil to work when it comes to easing depression?

I am bipolar, and am currently in a really bad depressive state. My psych told me to take Omega-3 Fish Oil in a very high dose, among other drugs. I’m wondering if it has an immediate effect, or if it works like anti-depressants and takes weeks to build up in the body and do anything?
My psychologist – the one in charge of my meds. He has given it to several of his patients with fantastic results. There have been many studies done – it does work for many people. I’m just wondering how long it takes to work.

  1. I have never heard of fish oil for depression…I would guess that it would take several weeks to see results if at all.

your psych told you this?? you should see your doctor first and talk to her before you take any herbal remedies or vitamins along with anti- depressants

One of the symptoms of an Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is depression but I don’t know if a deficiency is your problem. And to contradict myself, some studies claim that low levels of O-3 have nothing to do with depression. But there seems to be strong enough evidence to support using O-3s as a part of depression treatment. Studies have shown from 3 weeks to a month.

To start seeing improvements, it takes as long as it takes for your food to digest, usually 4 hours. Your body constantly needs to repair its cells each and every day. Therefore, you should include this in your diet everyday. This is not a pill that you take a certain period of time. Pills are artificial and is a immediate intervention to help your body perform better or to correct a situation. When your body lacks certain necessities, then things happen, such as depression. Give it its necessities and it will slowly improve. The minute you stop, the minute you body starts to go down hill. Some medication, if taken by itself and warm tea, will absorb more quickly into your blood stream. For anything to be absorb more quickly it needs oxygen, therefore drinking plenty of water helps, and exposure to fresh air and exercise.
