How many fish can go in a 26 litre tank?

My cousin has a tank that is 26 litres. His fish are dying when he puts them in in a couple of days or over night. I think its over crowding. What do you think? How many fish (coldwater simple fish eg goldfish) can fit?

Depends on the size of the fish you put in the tank
I think perhaps that the condition on the water needs to to checked for the proper balance. Small fish don’t do well if you just put them in water right from the tap.
He has only about a 6 gallon tank there. Really the only thing I would put in a 6 gallon tank, ESPECIALLY if there is no filtration but with a small heater (unless the house is warm) is a Betta fish (siamese fighting fish). Other then that, he needs to get a bigger tank if he wants to keep other fish. He also needs to research any fish he’s thinking about getting and also learn how to properly care for a tank (including getting is fish-ready, called “cycling”). So he has some homework to do, or his fish will never live. Plain truth of the matter.

That tank is between 5 and 6 UK gallons. The answer to your question is:
A single male Siamese Fighting Fish/Betta – and, IMO, even that’s pushing it.
Anything else is overstocking the tank.

Hi Matt, You are correct-that is severe overcrowding.26 litres is only 5 & a half UK gallons [about 7 US] & that is way too small for even a single baby Goldfish so no wonder they were dying-they would have suffocated on their own waste. 1 Goldfish needs at least a 10 gallon filtered tank with a fitted lid-increase the size of the tank by 10 gallons for each additional fish you intend getting. Never stock a tank too quickly as the immediate bio-load from the fish will completely overwhelm the filter & you’ll get a toxic melt down. Filters need time to adjust & grow the necessary good bugs that eat the toxins. The link below has all the details.
