I just bought a 20 gallon tank, and I’m a begginer. I know people say 1 inch of fish per gallon, but many experts say thats CR4P… Like I was thinking of getting some medium sized freshwater tropical fish. How many should I put in? Like guppy or dwarf gourami sized fish…

When you go to the fish store, ask the store clerk for suggestions. That is a good sized tank, so you should be able to put quite a few in there. A nice “community” group would be cool – neons, zebras, sword tails, moons, mollies, catfish…They all get along pretty well.

you can put as many as you want too just make sure that they are all the same kind of :like all fresh water or salt water stuff like that the last 20 gallon tank i had i had about 25fish in it ,just remember to keep themall fresh or salt water dont mix them because they all have to be in different temps and dont add goldfish as they dont need heat and it will kill them hope that helps you.the best way to do it is put only what you can take care of cause the tank has to be cleaned once a week

It depends on the fish species for size per gallon. Guppies do well with more in there, but dwarf gouramis will grow, and they need more territory because they can be semi aggressive. Don’t place guppies and gouramis in the same tank, when the gouramis grow, they will eat your guppies, or pick at their fins. They will also pluck the eyes out of cory cats. Swordtails, mollies, and platys are all live bearers and do well with guppies if you are planning a community aquarium.

It all depends on what kind of fish you want to have. Something along the lines of guppies, you can buy more than other, but usually end up buying a “fish hatchery” type pen to add to the aquarium for all the babies that will probably come forth. Talk with your pet shop specialist on different type fresh water fish and they should be able to answer this for you. On the other hand, I asked a shop manager/owner the same thing about salt water fish, because I wanted to obtain sharks, but didn’t think any other fish could be in the same tank. That is exactly right as I came to find out the hard way. He told me that Puffers and Sharks could live together, but mine ended up eating both Puffers and then turned on one another. Of course the stronger one won all the battles, but soon died being alone. I guess sometimes questions can only be answered by living and learning through hands on experience. GL…

  7. You can put 1 inch of fish for every gallon and also put the same kind of fish together(EX.tropical, freshwater)and that’s all I know

most pet stores willl tell you how many will work in your tank but i think that 5 or 6 that size would be good.

  9. The amount of fish you put in really depends on the amount of water movement, type of filtration, and if you have an air pump. Stock your fish slowly and make sure they all seem comfortable. I would say a total of 4 dwarf gouramis, and 4 guppies or other type of live-bearer since you will need room for the fry as they mature.
