i would choose zebra danios since they’re very hardy and inexpensive. id get 4 of them to start out.

    2 fish should be good
use a hearty inexpensive fish that in case it dies you will not be out too much money
Don’t know anything about Blood Parrots, I have a salt water tank.

You should get at the least, 4 fish and 1 pleco. Feed the pleco algae wafers. Get a filter, air pump, ect.

I can’t help it, I have to do it.

Doing a fishless cycle is sooo much easier than cycling with fish. You never have to worry about doing a water change until the tank is cycled. You can also cycle a tank faster without fish than you can with fish.

i know it’s not in your plan, but why would you want to intentionally hurt the fish when there is an eaiser/better and less expensive option available.

Narrow your options, cichlids are no good for cycling a tank.

Use feeder goldfish. 6X1″ will get you there, they cost very little and the pet shop will take them back when your finished.

No heat required with goldfish and they produce plenty of waste.

Fishless cycle is best, but I didn’t say do a fishless cycle :o )

What’s so hard about buying pure ammonia and waiting 4-8 weeks so your fish can be healthier???

The secret to cycling with fish is to take your time and start with just a few small hardy fish. 4 danios or guppies could swim around in that size tank for weeks without building up a dangerous level of ammonia. After that time, the cycle has started, although only at a low level, you still need to build up the fish numbers, and cycle to match, in stages after that.

A fishless cycle is allways safer for the fish as they aren’t in the tank, but there is no reason you cant cycle with fish.

Cloning the cycle from an existing tank is an even quicker and easier way to get things started.

You could get 6-8 fish that are hardy (zebra danios, neon tetras, and guppies). I used about 15 of these fish to cycle my 55 gallon and they worked out perfectly. If you do a fishless cycle, it will take much longer, by even a few weeks, to eventually become fully cycled. Also, why would you want to look at a giant box of water when you could have fish already swimming around?

Oh, just make sure you add water conditioner to the aquarium before you add the fish. And get yourself some test strips (or test kit depending how serious you want to get).
