How often should I alternate the light on my fish tank?

I just got a nice little fish tank and it has a light built into the top of it. I noticed it got hot and I didn’t want to accidentally cooking my fish. How often should the light be turned on and off again?

fish need 10 to 12 hours of light a day. unless the light is making the water hot, i wouldn’t worry about it. if its affecting your temp though, then that would be problem and you may need a new light or a different type of bulb.
