How to make aquarium for a betta fish?

Fish
I have a betta fish that I got from a pet store. It is still in the little plastic container that I bought it in. I don’t know how to make an aquarium for it. I have a floral vase that I would like to use, but I’m afraid that it is dirty. Should I wash it with soap, or could that hurt the fish? Do betta fish need gravel? How high should the water be? Also, how much should I feed my betta fish every day?

Never use soap, never use a vase or bowl. Bettas need a 5 gallon filtered and heated tank. Do a fishless cycle before adding the Betta. Feed your Betta a high quality pellet 2-3 times a day with small meals. Occasionally feed meaty foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, krill, tubifex worms, etc etc.

ummm yes you can put a siamese fighter in a bowl or vase, they have like 2 sets of gills thats why they are so easy to look after. now you need to do cleans once a week to once a fortnight depending on how dirty your water gets. to clean what you need to do is move your fish into another small container. tip out the water. clean the sides with a cloth so its not slimy. no soap eva this will kkill your fish. give the gravel a swish around and wash any ornaments. you can wash everything with salty water if you like as salt acts as a good natural detergent but rinse well. fill with water. you must also put water conditioner into the water to take out any chlorine ect. you can purchase this at any good pet shop. put back ornaments and fish. feed fighter 1-2 times a day and no more than 5 pellets a day. any more will cause you fish to produce to much waste and dirty your water. your water level should also come to about an inch off the top so they dont try and jump out. and also gravel isnt a must but is sure looks better.
hope all works out

Hi. I agree with the last answer but I do use soap ( mild detergent) to scrub out tanks. BUT it MUST be rinsed 100% free of all chemicals and saop before you can use it. Personally I would not use vase. A small tank is good. I give everything to a betta I would a normal tank. Gravel plants etc. Its what you want to look at. I have some Betta in cold water and some in warmer heated tanks. Remember Betta like a fairly still water, especially if breeding. I feed the betta every 2 or 3 days, ust a small sprikle. The eat mostly anything. Betta food, flake, bloodworm, Google tank care….and learn about tank cycling and tank managemnt…thats where most people have their fish die.
Good luck

Bettas need a 5+ gallon filtered and heated tank.
A vase is not sufficient for a healthy betta. Neither is a bowl.
Also, never use soap to wash anything your fish will ever be in contact with. You’re just asking for trouble by doing so. When I clean something that is going into my fish tanks, I either use boiling water or a mix of water and baking soda to clean with, and always rinse very well.
Bettas do not necessarily need gravel, but they like live plants in their tanks, which do need gravel. So if you intend on having a live plant or two, then you will need gravel for the tank.
The water should be about 1/2″ or so from the top of the tank (once you get a 5 gallon or bigger tank of course). And bettas eat 3 or 4 betta bits (or flakes, or whatever you are feeding) on a daily basis. Fish like a variety of foods, so I try to give mine different things to keep it interesting. I choose from: Spirulina algae flakes, fish flakes, blood worms (freeze dried), a freeze dried medley, frozen omnivorous foods, sinking pellets, algae pellets (for my bottom feeders / otos), krill and shrimp pellets. There are tons of types of food out there, and your fish will benefit from having a variety.
Also, on occasion I feed fresh or thawed veggies, which is also good for your fish.
Good luck.
As Lo said, don’t use the vase, and don’t use soap. They need a 5 gallon tank. You can get a 5 gallon kit at walmart that comes with a filter. You also need a heater since they are tropical fish, even if your house stays relatively warm, the heater helps to keep the temperature stable. Unheated water will result in stressful temperature changes, and the cold will make the betta sluggish. Make sure the filter isn’t too strong either, they don’t care for strong currents or a lot of water movement. You don’t have to have gravel, but it’s better to have to hold plants in. Silk and/or real plants are good to have, so your fish will feel safe. The water should be low enough that it leaves room for it to get air. Feed it 3-6 betta pellets a day. You can also feed bloodworms and brineshrimp to vary their diet.

try to get atleast a 8G tank with proper filtration..donot do complete water change..do 20% water change every week…by doing a complete waterchange and cleaning gravel u’ll kill good bacteria that converts ammonia and nitrite…..use any gravel and some nice hiding ornaments as they like it…better if you have live plants but dont bother yourself now as plants need more care……

ok, I think people can get a bit crazy on the aquarium size. I think a 2.5 gal tank would do just fine for one betta, get a small heater for it also. Bettas prefer temps to be 78-82. I have a mini heater for mine. Anyway, most 2.5 gal come w/ an undergravel filter. Basically, you need to set the aquarium up and put about 2-3 inches of gravel over top of the undergravel plate. The gravel acts as a filter, as debris gets sucked into it. You will have to siphon the gravel to clean it ocassionally. Since you already bought your Betta, get your aquarium ASAP and set it up. I recommend you buy a small bottle of Cycle to help you establish some good bacteria in the tank. For the first two weeks, I would do about a 20% water change every other day or so. Don’t forget to add the dechlorinater. After this, you probably should do about a 20% water change once a week to keep your Bettas happy. Give your Betta a few plants to hide behind, preferably live. Remember that you should NEVER use soap to clean any equipment for your fish, the residue will never completely wash clean and it is unnecessary.
Many people keep Bettas in bowls. while it is true that Bettas do not need an air pump, they do need clean water. Amonia created by fish waste will rise to toxic levels quickly. Think about how nasty a catbox smells. Now imagine having to swim in it! In addition, unless you live in an unusually warm house, you will need an aquarium big enough for a heater, which is why a 2 gallon is about as small as you can go. Yes, people do keep this fish in small bowls, but the fish are cold and not too happy about it. Good luck w/ your fishy. The first few weeks is going to be the most crucial in getting him set in to his new aquarium. Basic Betta pellets are fine, feed morning and night, about 3-4 pellets each time. Take the time to give him a good home and he should do great!
