What common and preferably inexpensive fish has the best chance of survival for my 3 yr old daughter?

Fish

I’m thinking about buying her a fish for Easter, and it will need to live in a smaller bowl alone. I will help her care for the fish and the bowl but am not willing to spend much money on special foods, purified environment gadgets, etc.. I need a tough low maintenance fish. Thanks!

betta’s are pretty low maintenance, goldfish seem to last forever but the poop all the time.

A plain, basic Goldfish is a hardy little fish!
My daughter won our fish at a fair when she was 3 years old. She is now ten!
Our fish has been living happily in his bowl for 7 years, with no fuss and no fancy stuff.

    Peace!

The easiest fish in the world to keep is the common goldfish. It is an asian cold water fish which is also known as koi. These fish are very hardy and don’t need much maintenance. All they need is a clean tank and some food.

Depending on what kind of tank that you want. If you are going to do a small fresh water, I reccommend Mollys or Barbs.

They are pretty hardy fish. They need heat and a filter. They adapt pretty quickly to a new environment and they like the temp between 78° and 80°. In fact when I started my tank, that is what was recommended to get my tank started.

For your three year old, I would not go more than 20 gallons, maybe even ten.

    Hope this helps!

P.S. Yes goldfish are great too, but if you want a variety, there are so many different colors and type of Mollys and Barbs. There are even tattooed Mollys that have pinks and purples. They are a little more than the regular Mollys but pretty cool. I have silver, black and red tail Mollys. I have two different types of Barbs too, but I am not sure what they are called.

The common goldfish that you can get at any pet dept is very inexpensive and easy to care for.they can be kept in a fishbowl w/o air pump or filter,as long as u change water frequently.

Your basic, run of the mill goldfish. They’ll live forever in a small tank.

Daniel i also think BETTA is good option for your daughter. Because Betta needs very low oxygen and food.

and Guppy is also very good option. U can breed them easily, so u can have more guppy’s to show your daughter.

a Betta is very tough fish, doesn’t need a heater like mollies and barbs, are very graceful and prefers to live alone. so it would be perfect for you… they will eat regular fish food, and don’t cost much… they do like to have a real or fake plant to hide in sometimes. remember the water HAS to have no chlorine in it. so you can let the water sit for a day so the chlorine can evaporate out. you have to do a water change every week or so… TRY to get a bowl that is at least 5 gallons. good luck

Ps. goldfish really DO NOT do well in a bowl…they die of ammonia poisoning, because they poop alot more. and they will eventually grow to be 8 inches, and will die in a tiny bowl…
and the classic sucker fish ( Plecostomus ) will grow to be 2 FEET!!!!!!!!! so I don’t think it can live in a bowl. and + why would your daughter want to just see something sucking on the glass all day? and it needs alot of algae which you won’t even get in a fish bowl, and doesn’t eat fish food.

    so.. bettas rule!

I would get her a small 5 gallon tank with a heater and a filter a betta would do great in it.Betta’s can survive in a bowl but will do much better and be more active in a small tank.Don’t get goldfish as they can get very large and are messy you would need at least a 20 gallon tank for them.A small tank shouldn’t cost to much if you look around a bit.

A BETTA IS THE BEST WAY TO GO, A BETTA CAN BREATHE AIR FROM THE SURFACE, SO THERE IS NO NEED FOR A FILTER OR A AIR PUMP.

I think it’s probably a bad idea since any fish needs maintenance. But your best bet is a Betta fish…they’re the fancy colorful ones the pet stores usually keep in the very small bowls. Keep in mind these fish are not very active, they just kind of…stay in one spot most of the time. They don’t require a filter, but they do require water cleanings. But DO NOT USE SOAP OR DETERGENTS! This is lethal to fish! You should get something to dechlorinate the water, though (it’s not expensive), and of course fish food. I think anything more than that fish will require an actual tank, filter, etc. (even a goldfish).
Good luck! I hope this helped!

Wow, I can’t believe so many people recommend a goldfish… A small bowl is no where near the size of a tank they should be kept in. There are too many misconceptions out there about them. On top of that I would never keep a fish in a bowl period.

Your best bet is to go to a local fish store and they usually sell cheap bundles for a 10 gallon. It usually includes; tank, heating, filter, hood, gravel.

Then pick up either a few White Clouds, Danios, or Rasboras.

Bettas and Gold fish are great but if oyu get a gold fish you might want to get some kind of algae eater as well. Because as many people say they do poop alot. I had goldfish growing up and i liked them then. But i prefer guppies and neon tetras now. they are beautiful and colorful. they get along great. And you can get some cool snails to put in there with them instead of an algae eater. Just dont put a gold fish in with these types of fish cause they will eat the smaller fish. Good luck and have fun!

Betta is great low maintenance fish!
you could go to Petco or any other pet store.
petco’s price of betta is round 10bucks under depending on the kind of betta and the bowl ranges from 10-20bucks.
the food is round 2bucks and the water conditioner is round 3bucks.
so my estimation is that you need like around 20-40bucks.

i got my son a goldfish….flakes and bowl and all that good stuff came to less than 20 bucks

i got an algea eater though…to help keep it clean because the gold fish are a little bit dirty and the water gets gross pretty quick

and that is the best…my son now has a responibility, he acts like its the best thing ever…..so cute….when it comes time to feed the fish i break up the flakes and put it in the cap and he then pours it in….and whatever flakes are left we scoop them out with the net

when you change your water, what i do is put water in a container the day before i do a water change and the water conditioner to get rid of any chlorine and other chemicals that can harm the fish

  19. None. You are not interested in the proper care of the animal. What a horrible Easter present. Slowly kill an animal (the symbol of Christ I might add) slowly from indifference and neglect. That’s not a Christian value. You obviously have no clue what Easter means.

the only fish that i know of that can really survive in a bowl with very little matinence and cheap food is a betta.
