Fish

Hi!
It’s my cousins birthday. I want to get him fish for his 5gallon tank. He has no fish in it. He is new in fish keeping and I can help him but I am not sure about what fish would be the best fish to have in a 5-gallon tank. Please no:
GOLDFISH
BETTA
MOLLIES

Thank you very much for helping me have my cousin his best birthday party ever!

Get him a couple of fancy guppies.

If he wants one “cool” fish, maybe one of the smaller sharks or something like that.

If he wants a bunch of pretty fish, then get some guppies (if it’s the breeding-like-rabbits thing that’s putting you off mollies, then don’t.) A small school of tetras, corydoras, ghost shrimps, kuhli loach….small fish, obviously.

And be careful about fish. Don’t get ones that’ll grow too big – a quick spot check should do it.

I would suggest some guppies or angel fish or bala sharks. these are all inexpensive fish and they last awhile. when buying bala sharks they come in three so you have to at least buy three and they cot about 9.99 for all three at pets mart. the other ones are about 75 cents to a 1.50 a piece. Hope this helps :)

hit up the local pet store and see what they have. maybe get him some of those mini mini sharks they have. and get a guppie too (poop eating things) they can help keep the tank clean

    I’d say, Guppies.

They stay small (2 inches) and don’t require a heater.

So, 2 male guppies would be great! Males are nicer and if you had a female you’d over populate that 5 gal. in a very short time.

    Plus they are very cheap…

    Good Luck.

    No bettas or mollies,huh?

And goldfish are way too large for a 5 gallon tank. So that’s a moot point.

I’d suggest african dwarf frogs. They’re completely aquatic and can be fed tadpole/frog bites. A pair would fit in a 5 gallon aquarium (but no more).

You could also put a trio of very pretty male guppies (of his favorite color) or endlers in this tank. Tropical fish food, for them.

Consider some white cloud minnows, too. Two or three would fit nicely in a five gallon and they live for quite a bit. They’re gorgeous, happy, active little fish. =)

Guppies are really easy to take care of. But they reproduce a LOT! Females are usually pregnant when you buy them. But they do eat most of the babies.
But I’m just wondering, why no bettas? They are awesome, hardy little fish. And they don’t require a filter, as long as the water is kept clean. (but remember, only one in a tank, most are aggressive and will kill each other)
Do not get any kind of shark or angel fish, they are too big, or will be, for a 5 gallon.

Fancy guppies, Snails, Platies. I know u said no goldfish but they are easy to care for and can live in cool waters.

  14. White Cloud Mountain Minnows. The perfect beginner’s fish. 4 will school nicely in a 5 gallon. Other than a betta, I have no idea what you could do with a 5 gallon, it is too small to be of much use other than a “hospital” tank.
