What is a good fish for a person who never had one?

Fish
I am going to be going to school and I am not allowed to bring my pet cat (He’s going to stay with my mom.) I’ve hardly ebver lived without pets before. Whenever I’ve had to, I’ve felt really strange every day, like I went to work without my shoes on or something. We are allowed to have pet fish there. I would consider getting a fish. Does anyone know of a type of fish that is not boring, and that is fairly easy to take care of?

goldfish, or a betta
Bettas are great fish to have. You can only have one and they require little care, but a clean tank. Invest in a small 2 gallon starter tank that has a pump and it won’t need to be cleaned much. We have one and the fish loved to be on my desk at work and my clients giving it attention. Good luck!

If you want something different, try a dwarf frog or two, they are always in water, pretty cool looking!
Feed any the dried little worms, they keep the tank cleaner!

a goldfish is good, they’re pretty hardy.
But if you don’t want to be so cliche you could get a guppy. If you get a boy and a girl they will have babies, guppys multiply really fast, I know because my sister had them. They’re kinda fun, and she says they have personality.

Bettas are hard to care for…they die easily and you can’t have more than 1 in a tank.
Goldfish are easy and common.
All fish are pretty boring…

I would say (and I’m serious) a miniature shark. My friend has one and you hardly ever have to clean its tank. The sharks only grown up to about 14 inches long and all you have to do is put some fish in it’s tank. The fish have babies and the shark eats the fish. Pet sharks are cool and would make you look cool too if you had one. Pet sharks only need a tank that is about 3 ft by 3 ft by 4 feet.

Ok…I love aquariums, and have a large one myself…
I’d say if you are getting a nice sized tank (nothing huge) get a heating rod (only about $20) and get some Salmon Catfish… They look like sharks and everyone will say “Is that a shark”…
Easy to take care of, just keep ya tank clean and remember to feed em… My one has grown about 15cm in 5 years… My mates feed moths n spiders, very interactive to, will eat out of my hands..

Not catfish, 2 in one tank had a fight last week in England, splashed water over an electric outlet and burned the whole £300,000 or $500,000 house down!

I’d go with the Betta fish. They are pretty, feisty, and have a little bit of personality. Very easy to care for.

I know that lost feeling! I would recommend a male or female betta. They come in those little cups at XXX-Marts. (Don’t even get me started about fish abuse!). Besides getting a great companion, you would be doing the poor thing a favor by rescuing it from that cup. There are lots of online aquarium forum sites that would be very helpful for you to visit concerning actual fish care. I can recommend Aquaria Central and Aquamaniacs, for two. The betta is good because it is quite colorful, intelligent-looking, will interact with you, and a 10 gallon tank will suit it fine. (That size tank is acceptable to most dorms). Males are aggressive with each other so you do not want more than one, unless you put a plastic type divider wall between the two fish. (Male bettas will “flare” at each other, which is an aggressive characteristic. Some people believe this flaring contributes to a reduced life span due to constant stress). I do not recommend goldfish for a dorm room. Goldfish actually get quite large if not stunted by “goldfish” bowls and are very messy fish, which translates into numerous water changes. It is cruel to keep goldfish in small aquariums, IMHO. Good luck with finding your new pet!

save a feeder fish they seem to like that and will live forever

i would say take the road less travelled and sneak the cat in your room. i mean whoes goina know. give em their own special spot. or you can go on the road travelled daily and get a boring goldfish. and not to offense you, y is this question in the dog section. i would put it here too, cuz alot of people r in the dog section.

White Clouds. pretty, require no heater, inexpensive and less output than goldfish as they are small. a group of White Clouds are nice to watch. I keep and breed mine in a 5 gallon tank.

Beta (NOT ‘BETTA’ YOU DINGBATS!!!) (Japanese fighting fish) all the way – I have had a Betta for almost two years and do not have a pump (they do not need one!); what they need is for their water to be conditioned – the pet store will know what I am talking about.
Also, they are so darn funny – my Betta ‘Jack’ has been through two moves and still each morning, I am NOT joking.. he swims over and I swear he waves a fin at me… too darn cute. I have 4 birds, 3 dogs and a cat.. meaning, I have little time, and he is doing so darn great…
They have beautful colours also and if you are not able to change the water each week – no fret – I usually do it every 3 or 4 weeks.. sounds insane, but again – he is two years old !!!.. which is great for a Beta
Goldfish die fast.. sorry, but high high maintenance compared to a Beta and they are not as cute, and they swim more, therefore you need to feed more – Beta’s once a day is enough.
