What kind of fish should I get and how should I care for it?

I’m seriously going to try and have a pet fish. It seems like a step down since I’ve owned a guinea pig for five years but I have been interested in fish. I’m leaning towards a regular gold fish but I don’t know. I’m not that experienced so I don’t want a really difficult fish to take care of. What’s the best type of fish to get for beginners?

I would get any any kind of fish, just as long as it is not a salt water fish! Both are somewhat hard to take care of, but salt water is harder!

I had a beta for about three years, and he was a lot of fun. You can’t socialize them, though so only get one if you want one fish and not an aquarium habitat. All they need is a small tank with water that’s been de-chlorinated with drops and beta food, plus to be cleaned regularly. I kept mine in a bowl, but it’s better if they’re in a small tank with a bubbler to keep the water oxygenated.

get a goldfish and its baskily the easiest. smallish NOT circuler tank, fish flake food for gold fish (a pet store can help u with that), clean tank a minumium of once a week, with filtered water and drops from a bottle that helps make the water ok for fish (pet store will help with that)

i personally wouldnt get a goldifsh becasue goldfish are one of the nastiest fish you can have… they give off ammonia and makes the tank harder to clean .. try something like a betta but dont put it in one of those betta bowls i think those things are wayy to small and also goldfish get pretty big contrary to common belief…. good luck with your fish …. ooo and tetras are also good fish maybe some neon tetras but get them in a group of at least three becasue they likek to school together

Start with something really easy, inexpensive, and not terribly personable. If you get a starter fish that’s difficult and has a personality, and kill it accidentally, you’re going to feel really bad.
Fancy mollies are a good start, and they’re live bearers – they’ll repopulate themselves. That can be a bad thing if you’ve got a small tank, but there it is. Neon tetras are easy too, and they tend to school – stay together in a group. Very relaxing to watch.
After you’ve had a tank for a while, you may want to add a plecostymus – an algae eater. Given time and the right diet, they can become impressively large specimens.
Really want your pleco to become interesting? Every few days, drop a frozen pea or two into the water, close to him. He’ll snarf it down, rolling it around and around on his mouth like a little kid with a big gobstopper.

The perfect fish would be guppies… they are cheap and the boys have really pretty tails… they have millions of babies in any freshwater environment.. and all you have to do is feed them if you have a filter. Make sure to get boys and girls if ya want babies! They seem to live a very long time! and Kids love them too!
Beta fighting fish are real easy to take care of too but never put two or more in the same tank they like to fight each other… Beta fish can live in a clear glass vase with a live plant and feeds off the roots and moss that grows.. the cool thing with these fish is if ya put a mirror next to them they will try to run into the mirror..lol

most people start out with a gold fish theirs nothing wrong with that. get you a 10 gallon tank, and get you some algae fish, that way , you won’t have to do a lot of cleaning. just change the water twice a week, unless you don’t have a filter

Gold fish is really perfect, because it’s not really complicated to take care of, you need let’s say 2 or 4 goldfish, buy some aquarium… and just feed them and clean their water at least every weekends. and if you really want to take care some “big deal”.. try some good breed fishes, but be aware that you should be extra extra caring for them, because they’re too sensitive, they might die just for a little mistake, so i think start with a goldfish.

I started wanting fish back in November and did a lot of reading on the internet. Now I have a 10 gallon, and soon a 20. I’d say start with a 10+ gallon tank because it’s easier to keep stable and you don’t have to do as many water changes. I think a 10 gallon is really the perfect starter size – not too big not too small. You’ll need to get everything first, set up the tank, and let it cycle (google it). Pick some small freshwater fish like tetras, corydoras catfish, rasboras, barbs, otocinclus, bettas..etc. After your tank is cycled you can add about two fish a week, don’t add all of them at once. Once you get everything going and setup it’s very easy to take care of. Just feed them once or twice a day, and gravel siphon the tank (25% of the water) once a week.
I don’t recommend goldfish because they can grow a lot larger than people expect, you’d be looking at a 20 gallon for one and a strong filter and keeping up with water changes would be a must. Bettas are good beginner fish, but people often suggest them as an excuse to be lazy and stick them in a bowl!…They can be great community fish as long as you make sure the others are compatible. Also…to save money look for second hand aquariums on craigslist, for example. I wish I had done that…
Betta fish, they are very colorful and entertaining, provided an adequate living arrangement. Make sure you get at least 2.5 gallons. They produce little waste, are easy to keep fed, and live for a good while.
So long as you will care for it properly and not keep it in a 1/8 gallon bowl, I would recommend a male betta fish.

Goldfish die really quick….dont get one unless you dont want it for more then 1 or 2 weeks
instead, get a beta fish. THey are very pretty, live long, and dont need that much room. Make sure you only get one though!

It really depends on what type of equipment you have…
I will tell you now, that almost any species you decide on will need a filter (even bettas [fighting fish] contrary to popular belief)
For the most basic setups ( 5+ gallon tank, filter, aerator,etc)
I suggest bettas, as they are beautiful and hardy.
Goldfish are a no. They are normally disease ridden, and will get huge if they live.

Go for the Beta fish. They are easy to take care of, and if you are the kind of person that might forget to feed your fish for a week or two (because of vacation or other wise) they will survive on their own. Also, they are stunning to watch swim around in their tank and when they get mad, or scare/angry cause you are looking at them, they swell up and look even better!
