What kind of fish should I get for my 10 gallon fish tank? It’s a fresh water tank, and I know the choices are limited, but I’ll consider any suggestions.

A betta and some tetras would be good, contrary to some peoples beliefs bettas can live with other fish. You could even add a couple mollies.

Personally, id just have a single chaca chaca catfish.

The simplest and best fish for a small tank would be ‘live-bearers’, such as Mollies, Guppies, Platys, Swordtails, Anableps, ect. They are simple to care for, breed often [which is always fun!] and almost always get along. Make sure you have a simple aquarium for these fish, as they are ‘tropical’ fish and will need to be kept at a consistent 75-80.
It depends on what you like, try community fish like sicklets. i have Oscars and Red Devils but i have a 40 gallon tank. They eat live gold fish i know that sounds mean but the husband likes it lol

I’ve always wanted to get a ten gallon and just fill it with neons, I don’t know why. Anyway, some of my favorite fish that are good for ten gallons are platy, guppies, mollies, neons, swordtails, corydora catfish, betta, gold mystery snails, fantail goldfish, bubble eye goldfish, and cardinal tetras. If you don’t know a lot about fish, then RESEARCH!! If I were you I would go for swordtails and platy. However these are livebearers, so to prevent yourself from getting 1000000 babies(fry) get only one gender, then get some neons or glowlight tetras to complete it. Also on second thought don’t get mollies, they are brackish, not fresh.

1 Betta should be fine. You could also have 4 livebearers of your choice because if they give birth, the fry will have a space of 6 gals. Do not mix bettas with other fishes.

I would get som neon tetras. They require a heater but they are very pretty.
Bettas and rasboras are the only fish for a 10 gallon and you can have them both, but you shouldn’t have more than 10 inches of them. One of your responders suggests 20+ inches of fish. That’s fine if you don’t mind watching them die off until the tank isn’t over-crowded anymore. Many people think the size of the fish determines the size tank it needs. While a large fish should definitely be in a large tank, many small fish still need a larger tank. It has to do with water quality and schooling. Neon tetras need very good water quality and school, which means they need at least 30 gallons. You can also put shrimp and snails in with a betta. He will like plants and caves to swim around as well. Here’s a site to help:

Some of the best, pretty hardy fish out there are rainbowfish (3-4 inches, depending on species), corydoras (2-3 inches), swordtails (4 inches), platies (2-3 inches), African butterfly fish (5 inches), and diamond tetras (2 inches). These are all community fish and easy to maintain. These are some of the fish that I have had the best of luck from in my tank so far and have had no trouble from any of them. Remember, one inch per gallon, too.

omgoodness, all these people saying about getting mollies O.O Mollies are truly a brackish fish, and even though they do well in freshwater, their immune system and general health will be in so much better condition in slightly brackish water. Some sailfin mollies are even found in complete salt water!
Actually, there are many, many different types of fish you can get for your 10g tank. I will list some choices for you.
Betta Tank
you can have one betta, male of female, (if you do get female, you might be able to get two females), a school of white clouds (3-5), two cory cats, and an oto cat for cleaning. This is a very nice, easy, peaceful tank with activities.
Tetra tank
I wouldn’t really recommend this for a 10g tank, but it could work. The reason is because tetras like to be in larger school, so if you do get tetras, you will need to get only one specie. Get 8 of small, 1″ tetras and two corys and one oto. That will be plenty, and have lots of liveplants in the back for safe spots. Tetras also like darker tank, so have dark subtrate with background papers on three sides. keep pH 6.4-6.8
Asian (barb) Tank
This can be pretty interesting-very similar to tetra tank, but it will have more activity. since these guys dont need as large school to keep each otehr feel safe, you might be able to squeeze in two species. If you get smaller barbs, such as cherry barbs, danios, you can fit two species, otherwise, if you decide to have larger barbs (tiger barbs) or rasboras, you will only be able to have one specie. It is because rasboras like larger school, and larger/aggressive barbs need at least 6-8 of them to stay less aggressive. Any less, and in this little tank, they will be too aggressive. Get total 8 of those (either 8 of a kind or 4 or two kinds), and 2-3 of siamese (not chinese!) algea eaters. They stay small-3″ or so, and require the same water perimeter. keep pH at 7.0-7.4
Livebearer Tank
This tank will thrive with a little bit of marine salt, but Platies and Swordtails do not require any salt. Even though guppies will do very well in slightly brackish tank, they also do just as, or almost as, well in freshwater tank. The one thing you need to remember is to get ratio of 2-3 females per male. ideal pH is 7.2-7.6
Cichlid Tank
Cichlids can be a bit more challenging, but they are extremely popular and interesting to watch. If you would like to keep two or three, krib, cockatoo, or ram will work very well. If you are intending to keep only one, get one of african cichlid, or smaller south american cichlid. No larger ones, such as oscars, jack dempsey, angels, discus. They should be kept in a tank about 45g bare minimum. 55g+ is ideal for one.
pH depends on each cichlid. Kribs, cockatoo, rams need their pH at newtral or a little acidic, and african cichlids need them at 7.4-7.8
