What kind of fish should I put in my 46 gallon fish tank?

Fish
I am undecided weather to start a schooling tank, or a comunity tank. I am lookinging into both. I have read alot about what kind of fish will mix well, but am really unsure. My main goal is to get fish that are strong enough to live a long life. I think the schooling fish are beautiful. I am maybe leaning toward thoes. Please help with any suggestions. My tank is not a salt water tank. Also, let me know which ones of your fish have lived a long life. Thanks.

I love a mix of both kinds of fish. My favorite fish are angelfish, and many varieties of tetra such as neon tetras, rummy-nose tetras, cardinal tetras, black skirt tetras. Tetras kept in good quality water can live several years, and I’ve had angelfish that lived 5 years or longer. I also like ram cichlids, either yellow, blue, or bolivian rams – they are a fun cichlid with lots of character but not too aggressive towards the schooling fish.
I avoid danios and minnows personally because I find them too hyper for my taste, but if you like an active fish those are great choices as well.
If you buy healthy fish and cycle your tank correctly, there’s no reason any fish you have won’t live at least a couple of years or more.

You should check out Tiger Barbs, they are a schooling fish (need a minimum of 6, the more the better). They are semi aggressive, and so much fun. They come right to the glass when I put my face next to the tank. You can add other types of barbs to give it a community look. I have Rosy barbs in with mine, as well as a red tail shark & some Opaline gouramis. Just make sure you have lots of hiding places & large enough tank. Mine is a 46 gallon.
