I know the obvious answer which is they would die, but why? What is it about the salt that keeps marine fish alive, and what would biologically happen if they are placed into freshwater?

Because it will get dehydrated and it loses all of the water it needs and it just dies!
    Thats sad :(
I hope you’re not planing to do that!

  2. If you put a freshwater fish into saltwater, most fish would lose weight (from losing water from its body) and eventually die. Approximately 2% of all 21000 species of fish actually move from freshwater to saltwater or from salt to fresh at some
point in their lives, the move would kill any other fish. But even with these special varieties of fish, the move must be gradual so their bodies can adjust, or they too, will die from the change. If you want to learn more about why the freshwater fish will lose water, (or why a saltwater fish in freshwater would gain water), look up the words
“diffusion” and “osmosis”. there is to much to say here.

they live in brackish water and would die if put in fresh water because, theres not enough minerals in the water and they need the water to have a non-fluctuating ph to be healthy

Let’s start with freshwater. Due to osmosis their is a greater salt concentration inside the fish then the water so the water moves into the fish and the fish basically urinates out the extra water. Saltwater fish have less salt inside their bodies than the saltwater does outside therefore the water will leave the body so the fish constantly takes in water through the mouth and gills. If you move a saltwater fish into freshwater osmosis will move water into the fish and the saltwater fish has no mechanism to get the extra water out. Some brackish water fish have made adaptions to these conditions but I’m just talking about strict freshwater and saltwater fish.

There are quite a few reason for them dying. Certain fish can only survive in certain water conditions. It has to have the right pH balance. It has to have the right bacteria. I has to have the right amount of salt. It has to have the right amount of enzymes. If those conditions aren’t met the fish could go into to shock and poison your tank. It cold cause some fish to drown. I know it sounds crazy a fish drowning. But it happens.

As far as pH levels. Some fish need the water to be more alkaline, while others need it to be more acidic.

Improper conditions can cause a fish to stress out. They may even break out with a fish disease like ick.

You should check with your pet store about which type of fish for your tank. Bring them a sample and have them test it for you.

Even having too many fish in a tank will cause problems fresh or salt.

It’s the salt content that keeps these fishes alive like how humans need blood to live along with their organs. As this salt is used to keep fishes organs circulating like how we need air to breath. You can place saltwater fishes in fresh water but it may take days or weeks for this fish to adapt to the fresh water but it won’t look the same. We can compare this concept like gasoline. We have diesel and unleaded fuel. You cannot place diesel fuel in a car that takes unleaded it won’t run. It’s the same for saltwater fishes. They won’t run completely in fresh water. They may survive for a few days or a month. It depends on their organs. You should google your question to see what may be the right answer.

it would die. certain fish need certain requirements. there or only a few fish that can survive in either fresh, salt, & even both..the fish that can survive in either are called brackwish water fish such as, mollies, platys, scats, mono, puffers, mudskippers, gobies, catfish shark, cichlids.

Depends on the duration. Some saltwater fish can be given ‘freshwater dips’ for a number of minutes to rid (or attempt to rid) them of parasites ), then returned to the tank with no harmful effects from the freshwater (and vice versa, freshwater fish given saltwater dips).
