What’s the hardest thing you discovered about keeping fish?

Fish

What was the hardest thing about keeping fish for you? What was the worst experience you had, because you couldn’t find information out on how to do something. Tell me whatever you want, setting up the tank, finding the right fish, how to clean the tank, what was hard about setting up a saltwater tank, or a freshwater tank. Feeding how much. Anything you found hard, frustrating.

And is there anything you wish you could find more information on? Or could have found more information on at the time.

i used to have tropical fish and found it hard to clean the tank as it was large, also i didnt know which fish could live together and get along without killing each other.
in the end most of my fish died as a bit of weed came up and got stuck in the oxegen tube :(

  2. The Mexican Flu – Swine Flu

Having been in the fish hobby for 10+ years, and still have a nitrate spike that killed off around 20 fish.

Cause was overfeeding, and decomposing plants.

the first thing i learned is that fish (and their aquariums) take better to being underfed than overfed. if you overfeed, there’ll be an abundance of waste and extra-food that builds up. if you underfeed, you’ll notice your fish gulping at the top of the tank, and then you can feed them.

the 2nd thing i know is that keeping your tank in direct sunlight leads to quicker algae-green-stuff build up on the sides of the tank.

this probably won’t get ”Best answer” or anything, but it’s just what i know.

Definately learning about the whole cycling process…im still not clear on it! Also putting the plants in the tank took forever as it was very fiddly :P x

I hate feeding the fish. Sometimes I forget and they die. I have two red belly piranhas.

  6. Tankmate compatibility. In my early days, the petstore said, “Yes, angelfish and neon tetras will get along fine!” Big mistake. They just wanted to sell more fish to me. Don’t trust those compatibility charts entirely (it’s more a guide, but not a guarantee!)

Bottom line: if you’re small enough to fit into another fish’s mouth, you’re dinner!

Actually, the most frustrating thing for me about fishkeeping is when you’re trying to help someone who’s asked a question about fishkeeping on this site and others – and then goes and ignores the advice you’re trying to give them.

I suppose the glass was the hardest, but that had already been discovered.
Never depend on a single heater. If it burns out, most, if not all, of your fish could die.

    1) THIS would have killed me, but fortunately, people talked me outa it. I almost bought a red tailed catfish for a 275 gallon tank

    2) ALWAYS cover your tank, and never trust petco, petsmart, petland, or walmart. a list of all the fish they killed.
