When fish are dying, they breathe very heavily and take in a lot of oxygen. When they eventually die, since the oxygen is less dense than water, it brings up their body which causes it to float. But, after all of this oxygen escaped from the dead fish, it will begin to sink. If you didn’t see your fish when it died right away, you probably would only find it on the ground of the tank.

If you want a good example of this, try this. Go into a swimming pool, and take a deep breath. Go full underwater and let out all of the air you can. You’ll notice that you could actually sit, or lie flat on the floor of the pool.

Good luck with anything you do…

  2. Why does it matter why it floated to the top?

I would worry more about why the fish died rather then what its doing after its dead

To my experience, fishes that JUST died sinks. They float when they are a couple of hours dead where their insides rot and bacterias in their insides multiply and release gas making them float.

Answerer 1 has an example which I dont think is quite hmmm… nevermind.
Watch news about people drowning, bodies not found until they float which is around 3 days from the day they drowned.

right after death a fish will sink normally. after a while, gases in the body will cause the fish to bloat up and float to the surface. normally by then, plecos and other fish have eaten the eyes and belly out of the fish (they are scavengers, after all lol).
